Mamaroneck Diner and Pizza

“What do you want to eat?”
“I dunno. What don’t you want to eat?”
“I dunno.”

When you’re involved in a conversation like this, the perfect choice is a diner. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, salads, sandwiches, and side dishes, there is a little of everything for everyone. This particular conversation led us to the Mamaroneck Diner & Pizza.

Mediterranean Spreads

First up was the appetizer called the Mediterranean Spreads ($10) which consists of a healthy pile of Hummus, what the menu describes as Eggplant Salad (sort of a Babaganoush), and Tirokafteri (a kind of feta cheese spread). Accompanying the spreads are plenty of Kalamata Olives, some cucumber and tomato. Served with toasted pita slices for scooping and dipping, this is definitely an appetizer that it meant for sharing or for use as an entire meal.

The hummus had a very different texture, unlike any I’ve tried over my years of eating the dish. This was creamy and almost the same consistency as cottage cheese. [Insert confused expression.] It tasted like hummus, sort of looked like hummus, probably was hummus, but…. Nevertheless, don’t let that description dissuade you from ordering the dish. It was good. The eggplant spread was the star. It was creamy and tart, savory and smooth. I was not fond of the Tirokafteri. It was too salty and lemony for my taste buds.

Omlette 4 your Choosing

I went with my diner staple, an omelet (though they spell it omelette). There is a Omelette 4 your Choosing ($8.30) option that allow for four choices between ham, back, tomatoes, eggplant, and more. I went with mushroom, onion, broccoli, and cheddar cheese. The egg white option is an extra buck. It was good. Plenty of fillings. The home fries were of the quasi-tater-tot variety. They could have been more crisp on the outside, but were still very tasty.

Buffalo Chicken Salad

My girlfriend ordered the Buffalo Chicken Salad ($10.50) sans the hard boiled egg. The greens were a mix of iceberg lettuce and mesclun. The cheese was a mix of cheddar and montery jack. There was also a smattering of Kalamata olives. She ordered the Hot version, which is not terribly spicy. The chicken was very fresh and had nice flavor.

The staff is friendly and attentive. My girlfriend raved about the iced tea and I thought the coffee was respectable. One of the Mamaroneck Diner’s claims to fame is their pizza. Given the quality of their other items, I think I will have to give this a shot.
